What Is Your Ice Maker Doing?

No ice at all. Start simple, because the ice maker may just be switched off (see the checks below). If it is on, the usual causes are a frozen fill tube, a failed water inlet valve or a worn ice maker module. On commercial machines, add the water pump and float switch to that list.

Small, hollow or half-formed cubes. Not enough water is reaching the mould. Look to a clogged filter, a partly blocked inlet valve or low water pressure.

Smelly or odd-tasting ice. An overdue filter, scale in the water lines, or slime growing inside the machine. In a fridge, ice also picks up smells from uncovered food.

Ice frozen into one solid lump. Warm air is getting into the bin. The door seal or the dispenser flap is usually to blame.

The dispenser hums but nothing drops. A jammed chute, a tired auger motor or a failed flap.

Water on the floor. A cracked supply line, a loose fitting at the inlet valve or a blocked drain. Turn the water off at the valve until it is fixed.

It runs but the water never freezes. The cooling side has a problem: a refrigerant leak, a dirty condenser, a dead fan or a weak compressor.

A commercial machine freezes but will not release the ice. Scale on the freezing plate or a faulty hot gas valve. A proper descale often cures it.

Five Checks Before You Call

1. Make sure it is switched on. A raised wire arm, or an “Ice Off” light on the fridge display, means the ice maker is off.
2. Check the freezer temperature. Most ice makers stop cycling when the freezer is warmer than about minus 12°C. Set it to minus 18°C.
3. Change the water filter if it is more than six months old.
4. Look at the water line behind the fridge. A kink from pushing the fridge back against the wall is a classic. Check that the valve is fully open too.
5. On countertop and commercial units, clear the air vents. The machine needs space to breathe.

After a new filter or a fresh installation, give it 24 hours and throw away the first few batches. And never chip at jammed ice with a knife. One slip punctures the freezing plate, and that usually ends the machine.
