What Is Your Dryer Doing?
The drum turns but there is no heat. A burnt-out heating element, a blown thermal fuse or a failed thermostat. Heat pump dryers have no element, so the fault there lies with a sensor or the sealed cooling system.
It heats, but clothes take forever. Nearly always airflow: a clogged filter, a blocked vent or a dirty condenser. Check your washing machine too. If its spin is weak, clothes go in far too wet.
It will not start. A door switch that no longer senses the door, a blown thermal fuse or a failed control board.
The motor hums but the drum stays still. A snapped belt, a seized idler pulley or a weak motor capacitor.
Squealing, thumping or grinding. Worn drum rollers, a tired idler pulley or a drum bearing. Check for a coin or bra wire first.
It stops halfway through. The safety thermostat is cutting the power because the machine is overheating, the water tank is full, or a sensor is misreading.
Water on the floor. On condenser dryers, a blocked condenser, a split water tank or a failed pump.
A burning smell, or the breaker trips. Switch it off and leave it off. Lint near the heater, a shorted element or a failing motor are all fire risks.
Which Dryer Do You Have?
“Not drying” means different things on different machines, and most Dubai apartments do not have the vented kind.
Vented. Blows damp air outside through a hose. Common in villas. The hose gets crushed behind the machine and the duct fills with lint.
Condenser. Collects water in a tank. The condenser unit at the bottom needs rinsing every month, and almost nobody does it. If the tank light is on but the tank is empty, the small pump that lifts the water has failed.
Heat pump. Gentle and cheap to run, but slow by design. Two to three hours for cottons is normal. It has a second, fine filter at the base, and a clogged one is the top cause of long cycles.

Condenser and heat pump dryers also need cool room air to work. Shut inside a utility cupboard or out on a summer balcony, they overheat, cut out and take twice as long.

Why is my dryer running but not heating?
On vented and condenser dryers it is usually the heating element, the thermal fuse or a thermostat. A thermal fuse blows because the machine overheated, so the airflow has to be fixed as well or the new fuse will go the same way.
How long should a drying cycle take?
About an hour to ninety minutes for cottons on a vented or condenser dryer, and two to three hours on a heat pump. If your usual cycle has recently doubled, airflow is the problem.
Is a burning smell from the dryer dangerous?
Yes. Lint is highly flammable. Switch the dryer off at the wall and do not use it until it has been checked.
