Why washing machines wear faster in Dubai homes
Three local factors do most of the damage. Water in many Dubai buildings carries minerals that leave limescale on the heating element, the drum and the inlet valves. Heat and humidity make soap residue and damp rubber seals a perfect place for mould and odour. And a washer that sits on a balcony or in a small utility cupboard often has very little ventilation around it.
None of this means a shorter life is inevitable. It means the basics matter a little more here than they might elsewhere.
Load it properly
- Do not overload. Overloading is the most common cause of worn bearings and shock absorbers. You should be able to fit a hand's width between the clothes and the top of the drum.
- Mix large and small items. One heavy bath mat on its own creates an unbalanced spin that shakes the whole machine.
- Close zips and fasten hooks. They can scratch the drum and catch in the door seal.
- Empty pockets. Coins, keys and hair clips end up in the drain pump.
Use less detergent than you think
More detergent does not mean cleaner clothes. Excess soap does not rinse out fully, builds a film inside the drum and tub, and feeds the smell many owners notice after a few months. Follow the dose on the pack for your load size, use a high-efficiency (HE) detergent if your machine is a front loader, and cut back further if you see suds in the final rinse.
Clean the parts people forget
Door seal and detergent drawer
After each wash, wipe the rubber seal where water collects and leave the door and drawer slightly open so the inside can dry. Once a month, pull the drawer out and rinse it under a tap.
Drain filter
Most machines have a small filter behind a panel at the bottom front. It catches lint, coins and buttons. Checking it every two or three months can prevent blocked drains and slow draining. Place a shallow tray and a towel under it first, as some water will come out.
Inlet hose filters
Where the hoses connect to the machine there is a small mesh screen. Sediment from building tanks can clog it and slow filling. If your machine takes longer than it used to to fill, this is worth checking.
Descale and run a maintenance wash
About once a month, run an empty hot cycle with a washing-machine cleaner or the descaling product recommended in your manual. Avoid improvised mixtures unless the manufacturer approves them, as some can damage seals. If you have noticed white crust on the door seal or the drum, a descaling cycle is overdue.
Level it, give it room, and keep the hoses tidy
- Check the machine is level. A rocking washer wears its bearings and walks across the floor on the spin cycle.
- Leave a few centimetres of space at the back and sides for airflow.
- Make sure the drain hose is not kinked or crushed behind the machine.
- Turn off the water tap when you are away for several days. Hoses under constant pressure are a common source of leaks.
Early warnings worth acting on
Small changes in how the machine behaves are cheaper to deal with than a full failure. Take note of new noises, longer cycle times, clothes coming out wetter than before, a persistent smell that cleaning does not fix, or water pooling around the base. Our guide to signs your washing machine needs repair goes through these in more detail.
If your machine shows any of them, or you simply want it checked before something expensive gives way, our washing machine repair service covers front-load and top-load models.
